Goopy Mag
One of the biggest challenges in creating Goopy Mag was ensuring that it maintained a cohesive look and feel. Using the branding from our creative collective, Goopy Girls, I established a color palette, a loose visual language, and a collection of fonts to tie the publication together. We also encountered design challenges with the more interactive sections—for instance, some pages encourage readers to cut out pieces, which risked losing important information from the reverse side. To address this, we placed full-scale textures and artworks on the backs of these pages, ensuring that no essential content would be lost.
Elise and I also art-directed the cover photoshoot, creating and styling the jello that appears on the cover. Our aim was to craft an unusual, eye-catching cover that would intrigue onlookers and evoke the tactile fun of playful textures like jello.
Since its release in June 2024, Goopy Mag has sold over 400 copies and is currently available in 14 stores across the US and Canada. As a passion project, it has allowed me to develop my editorial design skills, experiment with diverse styles, and curate engaging content that aligns with the magazine’s playful theme. Our goal was to create a publication that feels interactive and visually stimulating, and we’re thrilled with the positive reception so far. The first edition is available at goopygirls.com.
